William Joseph Ihlenfeld II, born on May 5, 1972, is an American lawyer and politician from West Virginia. He’s a Democrat and has been the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia since 2021. He previously held the same position under Barack Obama. From 2018 to 2021, he was a state senator in the West Virginia Senate for the 1st district.

Education-wise, Ihlenfeld earned his Bachelor of Science from Ohio University and his Juris Doctor from West Virginia University College of Law.

Ihlenfeld’s career journey includes being an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Brooke County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney from 2007 to 2010. He also worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney and chief Assistant Prosecutor for the Ohio County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney from 1997 to 2007.

In 2018, Ihlenfeld decided to run for the West Virginia Senate. After winning the uncontested primary, he faced State Senator Ryan Ferns in the general election. They debated twice during their campaigns, and on November 7, Ihlenfeld emerged victorious, winning 53% of the vote against Ferns’ 47%.
