Vanessa Ruth Waldref, born in 1980, is an American lawyer currently holding the position of United States attorney for the Eastern District of Washington since October 2021.

Waldref grew up in Spokane, Washington. Her sister, Amber Waldref, was a member of the Spokane City Council. Vanessa earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown University in 2002 and later completed her Juris Doctor from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2008.

Vanessa Waldref began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge John D. Bates at the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She worked as an associate at different law firms, including Morrison & Foerster, Lukins & Annis, and Lee & Hayes.

She served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington from 2013 to 2020. She also worked as a trial attorney in the United States Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division.

In July 2021, Waldref was nominated to be the United States attorney for the Eastern District of Washington. After being approved by a committee in September 2021, she was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 30, 2021, and officially took office on October 7, 2021, with the swearing-in conducted by chief judge Stanley Bastian.
