Tessa M. Gorman, an American lawyer based in Washington, has held significant legal roles. She served as the Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington in 2021 and again from 2023. Gorman also works as an Assistant United States Attorney for the same district. In 2018, President Donald Trump had plans to nominate her for a United States district judge position in the same court, but this nomination never reached the U.S. Senate.

Gorman attended Yale University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree while being part of the varsity track and field team. She later completed her Juris Doctor degree at the UC Berkeley School of Law, where she was also an editor of the California Law Review.

Following law school, Gorman worked as a law clerk for Judge Douglas P. Woodlock in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She then became an Honors Trial Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division, specifically in the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Section. At present, Gorman serves as the First Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington. She took on the role of Acting U.S. Attorney in 2021 and again in 2023 after resignations.

President Trump’s plan to nominate Gorman for the United States District Court seat in the Western District of Washington was announced in 2018. This nomination was meant to fill the vacancy left by Judge Robert S. Lasnik, who had taken senior status.

However, due to disagreements between the White House and Washington’s Senators over a separate nomination, Gorman’s nomination was never officially submitted to the Senate.
