Joseph Jean-Pierre Marc Garneau was born on February 23, 1949, in Quebec City, Canada. He is a retired Canadian politician, former astronaut, and naval officer. He served as a Cabinet minister from 2015 to 2021 and was a member of the Liberal Party. Garneau held roles as the minister of transport from November 2015 to January 2021 and as the minister of foreign affairs from January to October 2021. He represented the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount district in Parliament.

Before his political career, Garneau was a naval officer and became an astronaut in 1983. He made history on October 5, 1984, by becoming the first Canadian in space as part of the STS-41-G Space Shuttle mission. He flew on two more missions, STS-77 and STS-97, and spent a total of over 677 hours in space.

Garneau’s journey began with studies at the Royal Military College of Canada, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics. Later, he achieved a PhD in electrical engineering and served as a naval combat systems engineer.
