Mahmud Jamal, born in 1967, is a Canadian judge on the Supreme Court of Canada since 2021. Before this, he was a partner at a law firm and taught law at universities. He was born in Kenya to a family from South Asia.
Mahmud Jamal was born in Nairobi, Kenya, to a family that moved from India to Africa in the 19th century. Later, they moved to England and in 1981, they settled in Canada.
He finished high school in Edmonton, Alberta. He then went to the University of Toronto and later attended McGill University Faculty of Law. He also studied at Yale Law School in the United States.
Jamal worked as a lawyer and represented companies in court. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1996 and became a partner in a law firm. He also taught law at McGill University and Osgoode Hall Law School.
In 2019, he became a judge on the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Later, in 2021, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. This made him the first judge from a visible minority group in the Supreme Court.
