An 18-year-old University of Alabama student from Nigeria died after jumping off a cliff at Lake Nicol in Tuscaloosa on Friday.

Ifeanyi Chidubem Prince Anyoku was with a group of friends at the lake when he jumped into the water but failed to resurface. Authorities responded to the scene and searched for Anyoku for several hours before his body was recovered on Saturday.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said there is no evidence of foul play and that Anyoku’s death is believed to be accidental.

“This is a tragic loss for the Anyoku family and the University of Alabama community,” Kennedy said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

Anyoku was a freshman at UA, where he was studying computer science. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and was active in the Nigerian Students Association.

“Ifeanyi was a bright and talented young man with a bright future ahead of him,” said UA President Stuart Bell. “We are deeply saddened by his loss and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

A memorial service for Anyoku will be held on Saturday at the First African Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa.
