Andre Damian Williams Jr. is an American lawyer currently serving as the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, making history as the first African-American to hold this position in that district.

Born in 1980 in Brooklyn, New York City, Williams was raised in the Atlanta metropolitan area by his Jamaican immigrant parents. He excelled in high school at Woodward Academy, even becoming the student body president in his final year. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Harvard University in 2002 and a Master of Philosophy in international relations from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 2003. He later attended Yale Law School, receiving his Juris Doctor in 2007.

Williams’ legal career began with prestigious clerkships for Judge Merrick Garland and Justice John Paul Stevens. He worked as a litigation associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and served as an assistant United States attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he became known for his work on securities and commodities fraud.

In August 2021, Williams became the first African-American U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York after being nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate. He has overseen significant cases, including those involving high-profile individuals like Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell and those related to financial fraud.
