Christopher Robert Kavanaugh, born in 1980, is an American lawyer currently serving as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia.

 Kavanaugh earned his Bachelor of Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2002 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2006.

From 2006 to 2007, Kavanaugh worked as a law clerk for Judge James C. Cacheris at the United States District Court. He then became an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Columbia from 2007 to 2014.

Later, he took on the role of assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, serving from 2014 to 2021. In this position, he handled important responsibilities like national security cases and legal counsel. He also worked as senior counsel for the U.S. deputy attorney general. Since 2011, he’s been teaching federal criminal practice and trial advocacy at the University of Virginia School of Law.

Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner suggested Kavanaugh’s name to the White House for the position of attorney. On August 10, 2021, President Joe Biden officially nominated Kavanaugh for the role. The nomination gained approval from a committee voice vote on September 30, 2021. The United States Senate confirmed his nomination through a voice vote on October 5, 2021. He was sworn into office by deputy attorney general Lisa Monaco on the evening of October 7, 2021.
